Whales, honu, sharks, octopus and Hawaiian designs, cut in relief and in the round. Most are wall pieces; some are mounted to stand. Many carry pattern work cut clean through the body, so the wall behind shows through the design.
They're worked in koa, milo, monkeypod, mango and black walnut, often set with resin. Koa is the prized Hawaiian hardwood — it grows only in Hawaii and gets harder to come by every year. Milo is the traditional wood for calabash bowls and food vessels. Monkeypod has been a mainstay for carving here since the 1800s.
